Meet Steven McCalman, 2L Treasurer of the AJMLS Student Bar Association

Steven McCalman is a second-year student at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS) known for his leadership and commitment to service. Originally from Queens, New York, he relocated to Atlanta to pursue his legal education after earning his undergraduate degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice at The City University of New York (CUNY). During the 2025–2026 academic year, he has served as a Library Student Assistant and Treasurer of the Student Bar Association (SBA), reflecting his steady involvement in the law school community.

Steven traces his interest in law to a moment from his teenage years. Watching a close friend navigate a difficult legal situation shaped his perspective early on. “Seeing how the system could work against someone sparked in me a desire to pursue justice and serve others,” he said. “That motivation continues to guide me at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. It reminds me to strive for greatness, stay grounded, focus on the people I hope to help, and not lose sight of my purpose amid the prestige often associated with the profession.”

At AJMLS, that motivation has translated into a clear focus on juvenile advocacy. Steven previously worked with the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office in Juvenile Court, where he developed a deeper understanding of the challenges facing young people in the justice system. He now serves as a legal intern with the Cobb County Juvenile Court, continuing to build hands-on experience in this area. This summer, he will further his path in public defense as a fellow with the Black Public Defender Association, working with the Stevens County Office of Public Defense in Washington State.

Beyond his professional work, Steven is often recognized by peers for his consistency and supportiveness. “One of my most meaningful experiences has been being a steady source of encouragement for my peers,” he said. “Law school is demanding, and I have made it a priority to approach it with discipline, perspective, and a commitment to continuous growth. Hearing that my mindset has helped others stay motivated and feel more at ease has been incredibly rewarding, and it reinforces the kind of attorney and colleague I aim to become.”

Steven credits his family with instilling values of hard work and accountability. “I grew up in a single-parent household in Jamaica, Queens, New York, where my mother instilled in me resilience, discipline, and a sense of purpose through both her words and actions,” he said. “Most importantly, my strong family support system has played a central role in who I am today, especially my uncles, whose example continues to guide how I carry myself and approach life.” That foundation continues to guide how he approaches both personal and professional challenges.

Outside the classroom, Steven is a devoted father to his son, Logan. He also remains active in community service through organizations such as Hands That Unite Inc. and the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Across his academic, professional, and personal life, his focus remains steady. He continues to build a path defined by responsibility and comittment to the communities he hopes to serve.
