AJMLS Alumnus Judge James D. Boles, Jr. Appointed to Henry County State Court

Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS) is proud to announce the judicial appointment of Judge James D. Boles, Jr., Class of 2016, to the State Court of Henry County. His selection marks a major milestone in a career defined by legal excellence, community service, and unwavering dedication to justice.

Prior to his appointment, Judge Boles served as Managing Partner at Sexton & Moody, P.C., a law firm based in McDonough, Georgia, where he specialized in criminal defense, family law, and personal injury. His practice included handling complex felony and misdemeanor cases, including charges such as murder, armed robbery, DUI, and family violence, along with civil litigation and estate matters. He has conducted hundreds of hearings and trials, bringing both skill and compassion to the courtroom.

Judge Boles also served as Vice President of the Metro Atlanta Chapter of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (2020–2022), further demonstrating his leadership and deep involvement in the legal community.

Reflecting on his journey, Judge Boles shared:

“I am incredibly grateful to be appointed as a Judge in the State Court of Henry County. To be selected amongst the many well-qualified applicants is truly an honor. From initial application for the position until my appointment, I have been truly humbled by the support and encouragement of my community and peers in the legal community.”

A proud graduate of AJMLS, Judge Boles says his time at the law school played a pivotal role in shaping his career:

“Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School provided an incredible foundation for the pursuit of a successful career as an attorney in private practice. While in law school I had the opportunity to intern with some of the brightest minds in the legal community. Over the last decade, I have often found myself in court observing with awe the skill and aptitude of AJMLS alumni.”

After graduating in 2016, Judge Boles launched his legal career as a solo practitioner before co-founding Sexton & Moody. Over the years, his reputation for strong advocacy and ethical leadership has only grown.

In a message to current students, he offered this encouragement:

“I hope that my journey from graduation, to private practice, and eventually appointment as a Judge will inspire current students at AJMLS to be diligent in their studies, work hard to accomplish their goals, and be zealous in the advocacy of their clients. As a mentor once told me, it costs nothing—no money nor effort—to be kind to people. Follow the ‘Golden Rule,’ treat people how you wish to be treated, and you will be amazed at how far life will take you.”
