Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS) proudly recognizes alumnus Travis O. Foreman, Class of 2016, on his appointment as the first Black City Attorney for Swainsboro, Georgia. His selection in January 2026 marks a significant milestone for the city and reflects a career grounded in public service and community leadership.
Mr. Foreman has broken barriers throughout his professional journey. He was the first Black attorney from his hometown of Millen, Georgia, and the first to establish a law practice there. That step expanded access to legal services in a community where such representation had not previously existed.
A native of Millen, Mr. Foreman began his academic career at Georgia Southern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. He later earned a Master of Education from the University of Georgia before pursuing his Juris Doctor at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. Those experiences shaped both his professional path and his sense of responsibility to the communities he serves.
Reflecting on his time in law school, Mr. Foreman described the period as formative. “My time at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School was more than an academic experience. It was a season of challenges, transformation and growth that shaped not only my career, but my sense of purpose.”
He credits those years with sharpening his judgment and reinforcing the role lawyers play in advancing justice. “During those years, I learned not only how to think critically and advocate effectively, but also how important the law is as a tool for justice and service.” That understanding led him to view the profession as a responsibility to others. “The law is not merely a profession. It is a calling. It is a tool that can protect the vulnerable, promote justice, and help communities move forward with fairness and integrity.”
The lessons he carried from law school continue to guide his work in public service and private practice. “I learned the responsibility that comes with understanding the law and the power it carries in people’s lives.” He added, “Those lessons have stayed with me, and they guide me through every step of my professional journey.”
Mr. Foreman now serves as City Attorney for Swainsboro, where he advises municipal leaders on legal matters and supports the daily functions of local government. In addition to his public role, he maintains a private law practice, The Law Office of Travis Foreman, LLC, that provides legal counsel to individuals and families across Georgia. His work remains anchored in service and accountability to the people he represents.
He continues to measure success by the values that shaped his career. “They remind me that the pursuit of justice requires courage, humility, and a commitment to serve something greater than oneself.”
Mr. Foreman reflected on the role his legal education continues to play in his work and service. “I remain grateful for the foundation that Atlanta’s John Marshall provided. It helped shape the lawyer I became and the servant leader I strive to be, committed to using the law not just as a profession, but as a calling to uplift and serve my community.”
