Inside the AJMLS Alumni Association Board: Luis R. Scott, Jr.

-->

At Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS), alumni continue to shape the future of the legal community through leadership, mentorship, and service. Members of the Alumni Association Board play an important role in strengthening connections between students, graduates, and the profession. Luis R. Scott, Jr. (Class of 2011) brings a perspective grounded in experience and a commitment to giving back.

For Scott, one of the most important lessons from his time at AJMLS had little to do with rankings or perception. Instead, it was about mindset and persistence. “The greatest lesson I learned at AJMLS is that your starting point has nothing to do with your finish line,” he said. “The key is to drown out the negative and focus on working hard, being kind, and treating clients with dignity and respect. The sky is the limit.”

That mindset continues to guide his career and his involvement with the law school. As the CEO and consultant at 8 Figure Firm, he focuses on helping law firms grow through practical, long-term strategies. His decision to join the Alumni Board reflects a desire to create opportunities for others and to have a direct impact on the future of the institution. “I’ve always wanted to be part of something that shapes the future of the people who come behind me,” he said. “It helps the reputation of the school, the lives of the students, and the future clients they will serve.”

When it comes to advising current students and recent graduates, Scott emphasizes the importance of building a strong foundation early. Although he had secured a job before graduating, he recognizes that many new attorneys face uncertainty at the start of their careers. He encourages graduates to spend time working under experienced attorneys to develop confidence and skill, and to focus on learning how to effectively communicate and build trust. He credits these principles with helping him grow in his own career.

His understanding of leadership has also evolved over time. Early on, he viewed leadership as authority and control. Today, he sees it as something more intentional and people-centered. “Leadership is the ability to influence people to act on your behalf,” he said. “Now I understand it is about inspiring your team to genuinely want to help achieve shared goals.”

Through his role on the Alumni Board, Scott remains focused on supporting students and contributing to the continued growth of AJMLS. His experience reflects the impact that dedication, perspective, and a willingness to give back can have on both a career and a community.
