Meet Recent Graduate Lauren Covington: Emerging Advocate in Sports and Entertainment Law

-->

Lauren Covington is a recent December 2025 graduate of Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS). Her decision to pursue a career in law was shaped by a deeply personal experience. As a teenager, she had a guardian ad litem who fiercely advocated for her during a critical time in her life. Reflecting on that experience, Lauren shares, “She not only spoke on my behalf, but also took the time to explain legal concepts in a way I could truly understand. That experience showed me the power of advocacy and access to clear legal guidance.”

Lauren’s journey to law began at The College of William and Mary, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. This foundation in health and human movement gave her a unique perspective on athletes and their needs, later informing her approach to sports law. She continued her legal studies at Liberty University School of Law, completing a Juris Masters in American Legal Studies, which honed her analytical skills and broadened her understanding of the U.S. legal system.

Her pursuit of a Juris Doctorate led her to Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, where she concentrated her studies in sports, entertainment, and intellectual property law. During this period, Lauren also embraced global legal perspectives. She participated in a Study Abroad program in Entertainment Law at the University of London with Southwestern Law School in the summer of 2024, and a Study Abroad program in Immigration and Sports Law at Cambridge University with Tulane School of Law in the summer of 2025. These international experiences allowed her to analyze complex legal systems, cross-border contracts, and emerging issues in global entertainment and sports industries.

“As I progressed through law school and explored different areas of law, my motivation evolved into a clear purpose, to be a voice for young athletes, artists, and creators who may not fully understand the legal systems and terminology that affect their careers,” she explains. “My goal is to translate complex legal concepts into language that empowers clients to make informed decisions for themselves.”

Lauren’s leadership as President of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society stands out as one of her proudest accomplishments. “My proudest accomplishment in law school has been serving as President of SELS,” she says. “I helped build a community of like-minded students who share a passion for sports and entertainment law and organized events that allowed students to connect with professionals and gain exposure to real opportunities.”

Her professional experiences reflect her commitment to advocacy and access. Through internships and industry roles, she has drafted and reviewed contracts, assisted with trademark registration, and analyzed emerging issues such as Name, Image, and Likeness regulation for college athletes. Each opportunity strengthened her ability to serve creatives and athletes navigating complex industries.

An African American woman from the 757 area of Virginia, Lauren credits her upbringing for shaping the attorney she strives to become. “I was raised by a mother who instilled in me the importance of confidence, speaking up, and leading with care,” she shares. “I am deeply committed to serving my clients with integrity, compassion, and strong moral principles, and I want every client I represent to feel heard, supported, and genuinely cared for throughout the legal process.”

As she graduates from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, Lauren Covington carries forward a mission rooted in lived experience and guided by purpose, to make the law accessible, empowering, and transformative for the next generation of athletes, artists, and creators.
