Peter J. Duitsman is Of Counsel at Smith Entertainment Law Group, where he partners with and provides comprehensive legal and business affairs support to clients in the media, sports and entertainment industry, including advising content creators, platforms, studios and distributors in connection with the development, acquisition, production and monetization of content.
Professor Duitsman was previously Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel at Turner Broadcasting/WarnerMedia/Warner Bros. Discovery. During his tenure with the company, he served in various roles, with a broad range of responsibilities, including leading the legal affairs team responsible for content acquisition and unscripted productions, documentaries and specials for HBO Max and Turner Broadcasting’s live action television networks and platforms. In addition, he helped lead the standards and practices team and the team responsible for tracking and managing rights with respect to the substantial volume of content produced and acquired for the company’s many platforms and networks. In his various roles, Professor Duitsman handled pre-broadcast review and clearance of content, as well as the negotiation and management of complex agreements and initiatives across a portfolio of entertainment and sports programming and platforms.
Professor Duitsman started his legal career as a litigation associate with Troutman Sanders (now known as Troutman Pepper Locke) in Atlanta, and he also served as a judicial extern for Senior Judge W. Earl Britt of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
Professor Duitsman has served on the board of Georgia Lawyers for the Arts and as Vice Chair of the Copyright Committee for the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of Georgia.
Professor Duitsman earned his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina and his juris doctor degree with honors from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he served on the University of North Carolina Law Review and was inducted into the Order of the Coif.
