Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS) welcomes several distinguished new full-time faculty members this semester. Their expertise and dedication to teaching will strengthen our academic community and support the success of our students.
Professor Emma Cohen, Professor Alison Prout, and Dr. Mitchell Longan bring a diverse and complementary set of skills to AJMLS. Their combined expertise spans intellectual property, American legal studies, complex commercial and criminal litigation, trial and appellate advocacy, and federal prosecution. The new faculty members will teach courses in Legal Writing, Research & Analysis I, Civil Procedure I, Criminal Pretrial Motions, and Evidence, providing students with both a strong theoretical foundation and practical, hands-on skills essential for effective law practice.

Emma Cohen
Assistant Professor of Law
Professor Cohen brings seven years of practical legal experience to the classroom, having begun her career as a litigation associate at Latham & Watkins LLP in New York, where she focused on complex commercial litigation. She later served as in-house compliance counsel for Strategic Value Partners, LLC, a private equity firm based in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Professor Cohen earned her J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center and her Bachelor of Arts, with High Distinction, from the University of Virginia. At AJMLS, she is teaching Civil Procedure I, Civil Procedure II, and Business Organizations. Her intended area of scholarship is corporate and regulatory compliance.
Passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of lawyers, Professor Cohen draws inspiration from her father, a law professor of over 30 years, who instilled in her a love of learning and scholarship. She is excited to bring her practical experience into the classroom and looks forward to positively impacting her students throughout their law school journey.

Alison Prout
Associate Professor of Law
Professor Prout brings over 20 years of extensive legal experience, combining private practice, federal prosecution, and legal education. She began her career as a partner at a boutique Atlanta firm, practicing complex commercial litigation, and later joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia as an Assistant United States Attorney. In that role, she prosecuted high-profile narcotics and fraud cases, tried numerous jury trials, and argued appeals before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the Georgia Court of Appeals. Most recently, she served as Chief of the Training Section, preparing new prosecutors for federal criminal practice.
Professor Prout earned her J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School and her B.S. and B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania. She has also taught as an adjunct professor at Emory Law School, where she guided students through practical criminal pretrial motions, oral arguments, and evidentiary hearings.
At AJMLS, Professor Prout will bring her wealth of trial and appellate experience into the classroom, sharing insights from her decades-long career in both complex commercial litigation and federal prosecution. Her professional recognition includes the U.S. Attorney’s Award, and she has been named a “Rising Star” and “Super Lawyer” by Atlanta Magazine. Dedicated to mentoring future lawyers, Professor Prout looks forward to preparing students for the challenges of legal practice while fostering rigorous academic and practical skill development.

Dr. Mitchell Longan
Assistant Professor of Law
Dr. Mitchell Longan brings a wealth of international legal scholarship to the classroom, specializing in intellectual property, copyright law, and American legal studies. He earned his Ph.D. in Law Studies from the University of Sussex, his J.D. from Tulane University, and a B.A. in Psychology and Art from Mercer University.
Prior to joining AJMLS, Dr. Longan held academic appointments outside the U.S., including Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law and Associate Director of the Centre for American Legal Studies at Birmingham City University, Post-Doctoral Researcher at Queen Mary University, London, and Doctoral Tutor at the University of Sussex. He has taught courses in Intellectual Property Law, International IP Law, American Legal Studies, Foundations in Professional Skills, and more.
Dr. Longan’s scholarship focuses on copyright, user-generated content, cloud computing law, and emerging legal technologies. His work has appeared in leading journals and edited volumes, and he is actively involved in practical legal education, co-organizing seminars for working creatives and serving as Supervising Editor for the British Journal of American Legal Studies.
At AJMLS, Dr. Longan brings a global perspective and a deep expertise in IP and American legal systems, enriching the classroom with both practical insights and cutting-edge scholarship.
With our new full-time professors on board, AJMLS offers students a faculty whose combined expertise spans practical litigation, federal prosecution, legal writing, and American legal studies. Their guidance across courses ensures a rigorous and well-rounded legal education.
