SUMMARY:2017 National Celebration of Pro Bono
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 National Celebration of Pro Bono takes place October 22-28\, 2017 and focuses attention on the public service work that lawyers and law students do to improve the lives of their friends\, neighbors and communities. The ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service chose to launch this important initiative because of the increasing need for pro bono services during these harsh economic times. The Office of Student Affairs and Pro Bono Programs will be joining in the celebration this year by launching the First Annual Pro Bono Challenge. The Challenge will last from October 15-28\, 2017. An extra week was added to this celebration to give faculty and students ample opportunity to participate. \nVolunteer Opportunities: \nAtlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation – Tenant Self Help Clinic (October 17th & 24th)\nThis is a clinic that is held every Tuesday at Thomasville Heights Elementary School to help residents in the Thomasville area with their housing needs. Participants will assist tenants with drafting and monitoring repair requests. To sign up for this project\, please contact Matilde Davis atmdavis@avlf.org. \nAsian Americans Advancing Justice – Atlanta (October 27\, 2017) \nAlong with community-based organizations and AAAJ’s partners in Atlanta’s New Americans Campaign\, AAAJ offers free citizenship clinics in locations around metro Atlanta. At these clinics\, eligible green card holders receive free assistance with their applications for U.S citizenship. If you are interested in volunteering for this opportunity\, please contact Staff Attorney Javeria Jamil at jjamil@advancingjustice-atlanta.org. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Ian Walker at imwalker@johnmarshall.edu or Dean Harrison-Mercer at sharrison-mercer@johnmarshall.edu. \n
