Meet Professor Robert Brown

Teaches: Contracts, Negotiations

Professor Brown rejoined the law faculty at Atlanta’s John Marshall in 2022, after serving previously as a professor from 2009-2014. He is an expert in finance, commercial law, and Black studies. Professor Brown has a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College and a juris doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He has served as a municipal government lawyer, been elected a real estate capital markets partner at an AmLaw 250 law firm, worked in the legal/compliance department of a global investment management firm, and taught at historically Black colleges and universities.

Professor Brown’s research focuses on the legal structure of commercial relationships in Black communities, with a focus on mutual aid networks, Black identity and the Internet. His articles have been published in the New York University Journal of Law & Business, books, and national publications.

You will be provided materials to review in advance of the event to be prepared for a real law school class experience. This event will exhibit a typical day-in-the-life class for Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School students. After the mock class, there will be a brief discussion led by the Office of Admissions about the AJMLS J.D. programs, including the Criminal Justice Certificate Program, of which Professor Rapping leads as Director. Meet Professor Jonathan Rapping, Director of Criminal Justice Certificate Program

Teaches: Criminal Law; Criminal Procedure; Advanced Criminal Procedure; and Criminal Justice Lawyering

Immediately prior to joining Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School in 2007, Professor Rapping served as Training Chief for the Orleans Public Defender, working to rebuild New Orleans’ public defender office in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. In the ten years prior to his work in New Orleans, he served in the Public Defenders offices of Georgia and Washington, D.C., developing and implementing public defender training programs, and handling a caseload of serious felonies.

He currently serves as a Visiting Associate Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. He teaches and presents at numerous programs for criminal defense associations, public defenders offices, and law schools throughout the country.

In 2007, Professor Rapping was awarded a Soros Justice Fellowship to develop Gideon’s Promise, devoted to training and supporting public defenders across the Southeastern United States, a project he currently directs. He has won numerous awards for his work in this area. Professor Rapping and Gideon’s Promise are featured in the award winning HBO documentary, Gideon’s Army.

In 2014, Professor Rapping’s non-profit organization Gideon’s Promise partnered with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender (OPD). The partnership will help OPD improve the quality of representation in its state. To facilitate this partnership, Professor Rapping will work intensively with Maryland OPD to incorporate the Gideon’s Promise model across the state. Being asked to model this program in Maryland is truly the next step for the organization. Rapping will work with Maryland OPD to direct strategic planning and organizational development as it continues its great work trying to ensure justice is a reality in courtrooms across that state. Paul DeWolfe, the Public Defender for Maryland, invited Rapping to work with his organization after spending a couple of years working with Gideon’s Promise through its Leadership Program.

Professor Rapping was named a 2014 MacArthur Foundation Genius Fellow for the impact his non-profit organization, Gideon’s Promise, has made on society. The MacArthur Fellow Program awards unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.

In 2020, Professor Rapping published Gideon’s Promise: A Public Defender Movement to Transform Criminal Justice, which was a #1 new release on Amazon. Also in 2020, Professor Rapping was appointed by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms as Co-Chair of the new Use of Force Advisory Council in Atlanta. Mayor Bottoms issued an Administrative Order to convene an Advisory Council comprised of community members and partners to examine the City’s use of force policies and procedures. The Advisory Council made recommendations for operational or legislative changes to the City’s existing use of force policies. During the summer of 2020, Gideon’s Promise launched its new weekly podcast hosted by Professor Rapping. Gideon’s Promise: The Podcast explores the critical role of public defenders in systemic justice reform. Each episode explores a wide range of issues facing marginalized communities with subject matter experts, key opinion leaders, and people impacted by the American criminal legal system.

About Professor Van Detta

Professor Van Detta entered the legal field after numerous academic achievements and honors. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Union College of Union University, and during law school, he was elected Editor-In-Chief of Volume 51 of the Albany Law Review at Albany Law School of Union University. In law school, he was the inaugural Dean Ralph G. Semerad Memorial Scholar as well as a Van Horne Scholar; elected to the Justinian Academic Honor Society; selected by the faculty to receive the Scribes Award for the most outstanding and analytical student article published in Volume 50 of the Albany Law Review; and awarded the Cardozo Prize for his leadership and editorial work on the Law Review.

After law school, Professor Van Detta first served as Law Clerk to Judge Roger J. Miner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit before entering private practice. He practiced for 12 years at the international law firm of Kilpatrick Stockton LLP in Atlanta where he was elected to the partnership and concentrated his practice in the areas of domestic and trans-national employment discrimination law, domestic and European labor law, and international business issues, representing major international corporations.

Professor Van Detta then followed his father’s footsteps into academia, and joined the John Marshall faculty in August 1999. He was tenured and promoted to the rank of full Professor of Law in 2005. He served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in 2002 and in 2004.

In 2006, Professor Van Detta received the Robert J. D’Agostino Teaching Excellence Award from the students of John Marshall Law School, and he was named John Marshall’s 2006 Association of American Law Schools Teacher of the Year.

From 2011-2015, Professor Van Detta served as the Associate Dean for Scholarship. In addition to being a prolific writer, Professor Van Detta has lectured in collaboration with Professor Timothy Terrell of Emory University Law School on the topic of judicial opinion writing and editing. Professor Van Detta has also served on the faculty of numerous legal institutes in New York, Washington, D.C., and Montreal. Since 2005, he has served as a member of the Formal Advisory Opinion Board of the State Bar of Georgia.

In 2013, Merkourios, Utrecht Journal of International and European Law, appointed Professor Van Detta as a member of the inaugural Permanent Board of Referees, based on his expertise and scholarly publications in the areas of Trans-National Commercial Law, International Business Transactions, International Civil Litigation, Private International Law, Employment and Labour Law, and Jurisprudence. Professor Van Detta teaches courses encompassing those areas in AJMLS’s J.D. Program, American Legal Studies LL.M. Program, and Employment Law LL.M. Program. He also has taught and continues to pursue scholarship in the areas of Civil Procedure and Torts.

In recognition of his distinguished service to the law school, his excellence as a teacher, and the breadth and depth of his scholarship, the Board of Directors has conferred upon Professor Van Detta a named Chair in Law: The John E. Ryan Professor Of International Business & Workplace Law.
