Law Journal Symposium @ State Bar of Georgia Building

John Marshall Law Journal, in conjunction with the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC), presents the 2015 Dean Robert D’Agostino Symposium which will focus on “Decreasing Youth Incarceration  through Quality Juvenile Defense.” The Symposium will be held at the State Bar of Georgia building on March 9, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This year’s Symposium will address the overreliance on youth incarceration in the United States and discuss how defenders can work with juvenile justice system stakeholders to reduce youth confinement. Topic areas include: disposition advocacy to reduce youth incarceration, post-adjudication appeals to decrease youth incarceration, post-disposition advocacy, and the defense role in raising racial and ethnic disparities in juvenile confinement. The full Symposium itinerary will become available closer to the event.


The 2015 Symposium will present papers from the following authors:

Sandra Simkins, Director of Clinical Programs, Rutgers School of Law-Camden; Laura Cohen, Clinical Professor of Law and Director, Criminal & Youth Justice Clinic, Rutgers School of Law-Newark; Jerrod Thompson-Hicks, Senior Attorney, Second Chances Project, Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights; Lisa Geis, DC Law Students In Court Program; Jacqueline Bullard, Deputy Defender, Illinois Office of the State Appellate Defender, Fourth District; Ellen Marrus, George Butler Research Professor of Law, University of Houston Law Center.

CLE credit is available for registrants through the Institute of Continuing Legal Education in Georgia.


Registration fee includes 5 CLE credits, 1 Professionalism CLE credit, light refreshments and full lunch.

6th Annual Public Interest Law Society Fundraising Auction @ King & Spalding

downloadThe Public Interest Law Society  invites you to the 6th annual Public Interest Law Society (PILS) Fundraising Auction.
The PILS auction will take place on March 27th, 2015 from 7:00pm-10:00pm at King & Spalding.

This years theme is “Vegas Nights”. There will be casino games, silent/live auctions, music, free food, and drinks.

Donations and proceeds will help raise funds for the Renata Turner Public Interest Scholarship which provides grants to students who are interested in summer internships. Priority will be given to those students who have elected to work in the public interest field.

SBA to Host Masquerade Barrister’s Ball at Opera Nightclub, April 11 @ Opera Nightclub

Each spring the Student Bar Association hosts the Barrister’s Ball for the law school community as an opportunity to take a break from classes and enjoy an evening socializing with classmates, professors, alumni and friends.

This year will be no different! The SBA will hold this year’s ball at Opera Nightclub on April 11, 2015 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. This year, students, faculty and staff tickets are free. Guest and alumni tickets will be on sale for $20. There is no RSVP needed to attend, but attendees will be required to pick up their tickets and pay for guests tickets prior to the day of the event. The Office of Admissions invites all students interested in pursuing a law degree to attend an information session to experience our “community” firsthand. At the information session, students will have the opportunity to learn more about the school, meet professors, students, and key staff. Prospective students can also expect an engaging mock class presentation taught by one of our faculty members.

The information session will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Information for Guests

  • Parking is available at the GWCC. Additionally, MARTA has a stop near the facility.
  • The auditorium will open at approximately 12:50pm for seating of family and guests. Once the music for the processional begins at approximately 1:30pm, family and guests will not be seated until after the invocation has been completed. The ushers will not make any exceptions to this policy and will notify late guests when they may be seated.
  • Concession stands are available at the GWCC in between buildings A and B.
  • There will be a small reception immediately following the ceremony in room A412 for the graduates, their guests, and AJMLS faculty/staff/volunteers.

Information for Graduates

  • There will be an area set aside for the storage of personal belongings and robing in room A411. Only graduates, AJMLS Staff/Volunteers will be allowed in this area (no exceptions). Security will be provided.
  • All graduates must be in the Auditorium at 11:30am for commencement practice, then robed and in place for the class photo by 12:30pm, location to be announced during the 11:30am practice.
  • Class line-up for the processional will begin at 1:00pm, once the processional begins at 1:30pm, no graduates will be permitted to enter the line, please be on time.
  • Immediately following the ceremony, graduates must return to the robing room to receive their diploma. Graduates must ensure they have completed their Financial Aid Exit Counseling and Career Services Graduate Interview to receive their diploma.
  • There are no tickets for the event and no limit on the number of guests per graduate. However, if you foresee your personal guest count to exceed 25, kindly reach out to Dean Michelle Harris so that she may keep track of the number of estimated attendees.
