Professor Van Detta to Present in Upcoming AJMLS Lecture Series @ Blackburn Conference Center
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

A case that the U.S. Supreme Court handed down on April 17, 2013 has decided if — and how and under what circumstances — multinational corporations can be held accountable in U.S. federal courts for alleged human rights abuses.  This landmark decision, Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum, 569 U.S. __ (2013), will be examined  in an April 26, 2013 lecture at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.

In his lecture, The Alien Tort Statute and the U.S. Supreme Court: What’s the ATS and Why Should We Care What the Supreme Court Has Done With It In Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum?, Professor Jeffery Van Detta, Associate Dean for Scholarship at AJMLS, will discuss Kiobel and its implications both for multinational corporate enterprises (MNEs), as well as for human rights advocates and individuals who have been harmed by human rights violations that are proscribed by international law.

“Although backlash from the business community and several foreign governments unleashed heated criticism of the ATS, corporations have paid out millions of dollars to settle human-rights lawsuits over the last decade, and more ATS lawsuits have continued to be filed,” Professor Van Detta said.   “Kiobel, however, has created an entirely new legal landscape. Yet the topography of this new landscape, while clearer than before, still leaves important issues about ATS litigation unresolved.”
Professor Van Detta brings to the lecture both his experience in teaching International Civil Litigation and International Business Transactions at AJMLS, as well as a perspective informed by his scholarship in those areas.

The free lecture will be held from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on April 26, 2013, at the Blackburn Conference Center, 1405 Spring St. NW, Atlanta, GA 30309.

Professor Jeffrey A. Van Detta, Associate Dean for Scholarship, who teaches and writes in the area of International Civil Litigation, will address these and other questions about the ATS and the Kiobel case.  Please join us for the conversation. As always, the AJMLS Lecture Series is open to the public. To RSVP, please fill out the form below. For additional information, contact Rebecca Stafford at rstafford@johnmarshall.edu or call (404) 872-3593.
