Externship - Approved Placements

Fulton County Solicitor General's Office

Students work a minimum of 10 hours per week in the office of the Fulton County Solicitor-General. Each Extern is administered a Extern Oath and assigned as a student prosecutor to the Trial Division under the supervision of a Senior Solicitor. The student prosecutor becomes the third member of the Trial Team which also includes a Junior Solicitor. Work assignments include, courtroom participation on Arraignment Calendars, Motion and Bench Trial Calendars and Jury Trial Calendars. Externs will also be instructed on case preparation, conducting investigations, interviewing witnesses and complainants, responding to motions, ethics and professionalism. Students may also perform research and other tasks involving motions and appeals assigned to his or her solicitor. Each Extern is expected to conduct at least one Motions Hearing, one Bench Trial, and one Jury Trial per semester. . Prerequisites: Preferably the student would have completed course work in Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Litigation, and Evidence. The student must be eligible to practice under the Law School Public Prosecutor Act.* * (1) be in good academic standing (at least 3.00 g.p.a.), (2) have earned at least two-thirds (60 hours) of the J.D. requirements in not fewer than four semesters or six quarters of residence, and (3) be of good moral character. NOTE: Students participating in this externship may have to work more hours than required for other externships, and work hours may be less flexible during weeks students are scheduled to be in court. It is strongly recommended that students arrange their schedules so that they have at least one full day free early in the week. Students who work or have worked for law firms which practice criminal law in the State Court of Fulton County would be ineligible to participate in this externship.
