Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation's Domestic Violence Project

The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation ("AVLF") has become a leading legal advocate for victims of domestic violence in the metropolitan Atlanta area. The Domestic Violence Project trains private attorneys and third-year law student externs to represent victims of domestic violence in obtaining temporary protective orders ("TPO's"). The Georgia Family Violence Act provides civil relief to victims of domestic violence through an initial ex parte hearing, followed by a second hearing after service upon the respondent. AVLF provides pro bono representation to victims at both of these hearings. 3rd year law students have the opportunity to represent clients in court to obtain 12-month Protective Orders, under the supervision of a Staff Attorney.
