Despite the universal challenge of finding externship opportunities for part-time students with full-time jobs, JMLS continues to make progress towards providing these students with experiential learning opportunities. Potential placements have been expanded to include private firms or attorneys with pro bono clients or projects. Such placements offer more flexibility for students with scheduling restraints.
The number of working hours per credit hour was reduced from sixty hours in a semester to forty-seven, further reducing the scheduling demands of part-time evening students. Finally, part-time evening students are counseled early on how to incorporate externships and pro bono into their law school career. The externship website includes specific information and opportunities for part-time evening students. Currently, two evening students have externships with the Center for Disease Control Public Health Program and the Murphy County Guardian Ad Litem Program. |
