From the Office of Pro Bono Outreach and Externships
Summer Externship News
Students will no longer be able to register for externships online. The new process requires that you complete a Student Action Request and have it signed by Professor Turner or her assistant, Ms. Ortega. You must turn in your externship Secured Placement Form at the time you present your action request for signature.
Ice cream, ice cream we all scream for ice cream!
The office of Pro bono Outreach and Externships is happy to invite you to its first Pro Bono Recognition Celebration where we will acknowledge those of you who have taken on the banner of service to the community through your pro bono service. The event will take place from 3- 5 p.m. on April 18, 2012, at the Blackburn Conference Center. Come and be recognized!
Pro Bono Opportunities
1. Georgia Bar Association Video Project – Get involved in a new partnership with the Georgia Bar Association. John Marshall has been asked to create videos for its legal reference guide. This is an ongoing project and can be done at your convenience. Contact Greg Gelpi for more information at gjgelpi@johnmarshall.edu.
2. Young Litigators Moot Court Competition – The Young Litigators is a program for students, ages 11-18 years old, who commit offenses at school. Offenses include but are not limited to, classroom disruptions, fighting, bullying, and truancy. Students who admit their guilt, may voluntarily have their case heard in our courtroom. They receive their sanction from teen jurors as an alternative to the sanction from the school. The Young Litigator Moot Court Competition provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to write a brief and defend their brief in front of a panel. They research local and national issues.
We Need Volunteers to Help the Young Litigators Develop Their:
- Opening Statements
- Closing Statements
- Witness Interview Questions
- Provide Support and Guidance with their Briefs and Oral Presentation
For the past three years John Marshall students have given their time and support to the program! We thank you. ATTORNEY ADAM SUTTON (Graduate from John Marshall and one of the first volunteers with the program, will be part of the Moot Court Competition Panel this year).

Report your Pro Bono hours
To honor and encourage pro bono work, the Office of Pro Bono Outreach and Externships recognizes students in a number of ways: a celebration in the spring which is currently scheduled for April 18th, Pro Bono Distinction for all who serve a minimum of 75 hours of pro bono work, graduating students receive the “Excellence in Pro Bono Service” award if they are in the top 10 percent of their class for total accumulated pro bono hours and last but not least, the graduating student whose pro bono service had the greatest impact on the community will earn the Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears Pro Bono Award.
We want to recognize you, so report your pro bono hours to probono@johnmarshall.edu. Your report should include number of hours worked, where they were earned, and the impact your service had on the community.
