How will the LL.M. in Employment Law enhance my career?

Whether you are a new attorney seeking to develop an expertise in employment law or an experienced practitioner wishing to gain greater in-depth knowledge of the field, the LL.M. in Employment Law will enhance your ability to meet the needs of clients in the always changing world of labor and employment. For the new attorney, the practical knowledge gained from graduate level study will allow you to accelerate the process of developing proficiency in the specialty. Experienced attorneys will benefit from the program’s emphasis on developments in the law, giving those attorneys additional tools to meet their clients’ needs.

What is the class size for LL.M. courses?

Students will be grouped into cohorts of approximately 15 students when they enter the LL.M. program and the cohort will stay together throughout the five semester program. Where demand makes it possible to enroll more than one cohort per starting date, students will be grouped according to their levels of practice experience.

Is Financial Aid available for the LL.M. program?

LL.M. candidates are eligible for federal educational loans; the types of loans that are available will depend on the candidate’s previous borrowing history. Is the LL.M. program approved by the American Bar Association?

The ABA does not accredit LL.M. programs in the way it accredits law schools. Rather, a law school proposing to offer an LL.M. degree must seek ABA acquiescence, an inquiry that must convince the ABA that the LL.M. program does not detract from the J.D. program. The ABA has acquiesced in the LL.M. in Employment Law.

Can John Marshall J.D. students enroll in courses offered in the LL.M. program?

No. LL.M. courses are exclusively available to LL.M. candidates.

What are the academic requirements for earning the LL.M. degree?

To receive academic credit, students must receive a grade of “C” or better in each course. If a lower grade is earned, the course must be retaken or, if that is not feasible, another course must be substituted. The LL.M. degree will be conferred on those who complete the academic program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (“B”) or better. Graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better will be designated “With Honors.” A full explanation of the academic requirements is included in the Academic Code for the LL.M. in Employment Law.

What is the duration of the LL.M. program?

The LL.M. degree is earned upon satisfactory completion of 24 credit hours over five semesters. Candidates may enter the program in May or September. The degree is completed in 21 months. The Academic Calendar contains the complete program schedule.

How many courses are taken at a time?

Students will take only one course at a time, with the length of the course depending on its academic credit. Courses will be taken consecutively, not concurrently. In a typical semester, students will take two seven week courses.

Can previous legal work experience be considered for credits toward the LL.M. degree?

No. You must satisfactorily complete 24 credit hours from the John Marshall LL.M. curriculum to earn the degree.

Can I begin the LL.M. program immediately after earning a J.D. degree?

A prospective LL.M. candidate in his or her final year of study toward the first degree in law is eligible to apply only if he or she will complete all necessary requirements to receive the degree by the start date of the intended LL.M. program.
